Event registration process re-design

One of the products created and offered by my current place of work, is event registration software, where clients can create events and have delegates register for them. Some usability issues were identified with the process that delegates completed in order to register for an event, as the system used outdated design principles and this resulted in a number of abandoned bookings and form completion errors. I analysed the user flow and established that were were a few areas that could be improved upon in order to create a smoother experience. The key issues were - the progress bar was uniniviting and made users feel that they were not allowed to continue with the process, 2 steps of the progress bar were essentially the same, the steps in the progress bar were not consistently labelled, there was no error forgiveness or opportunity to back and correct any mistakes, the form fields used unecessary placeholder text, the form did not explain to users why it was requesting personal data like phone numbers and users were unsure what to expect as the continued on to the next step, with the process not matching up with established mental models and user patterns. I re-designed the process, correcting the identified user issues and streamlining the system to feel easy and quick to complete.
